At HealthTrust Connect 2024, experts from Environ Energy, Key Green Solutions, SitelogIQ and other groups came together to discuss the evolving landscape of sustainability in healthcare with Chris Hunt, Director, Contracts, at HealthTrust. From financial incentives to the urgent need for resilience against climate change, the session provided critical insights into how hospitals and healthcare organizations can lead the way in sustainable practices.
Why Sustainability Matters for Healthcare
Healthcare facilities are among the most energy-intensive buildings, and their environmental impact extends beyond emissions to include things like water use and supply chain practices. Panelists emphasized that sustainability in healthcare isn’t just about reducing carbon footprints, it’s about driving operational efficiency, financial savings and improved patient care. With extreme weather events increasing in frequency, hospitals must be prepared to handle disruptions while minimizing their environmental impact.
The Role of ESG Data and Green Debt Financing
A key theme of the session was the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data in driving sustainability decisions. While the arrival of the new presidential administration may shift the landscape in 2025,panelists highlighted how investor demand, regulatory requirements and corporate responsibility are often top of mind for healthcare organizations when it comes to disclosing and improving their sustainability metrics.
Green debt financing was another crucial topic. Hospitals have an opportunity to secure funding for sustainability initiatives through green bonds, which are tied to projects like energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy installations and waste reduction programs.
Extreme Weather and Its Impact on Hospital Operations
At the session, panelists shared how 147 out of 182 hospitals in a 2022 study would flood in the event of a Category 1 hurricane, and that number doubles for a Category 4 storm. The increasing intensity of extreme weather events means that hospitals need robust climate resilience plans.
David Dean, managing director at SitelogIQ, explained the importance of microgrids and on-site renewable energy generation as ways to enhance resilience. By reducing reliance on traditional power grids, hospitals can ensure continuity of care during climate-related disasters. Additionally, improved water management, storm-resistant infrastructure, and proactive disaster preparedness strategies can be crucial for sustainability and resilience.
Practical Steps to Improve Sustainability in Healthcare Facilities
Jeff Burks from Key Green Solutions emphasized that one of the biggest barriers to successful sustainability programs is the lack of clear goals, actionable data and leadership buy-in. Jennifer Kearney from Environ Energy echoed this by highlighting the need for a more practical approach to infrastructure renewal, focusing on renewable and electrified energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. As conversations around sustainability evolve, more organizations are recognizing that these efforts can be financially beneficial when approached strategically.
Practical steps that healthcare organizations can take to reap the benefits of an optimal sustainability program include:
- Implementing ESG data tracking tools to measure energy use and emissions. Additionally, institutions can consider upgrading lighting, HVAC systems and medical equipment to efficient models to reduce energy consumption.
- Establishing sustainability committees that include representatives from various departments to ensure system-wide commitment.
- Leveraging green financing options to fund capital improvements that lower long-term operating costs.
